Signifikanta skillnader mellan kust- och inlandsproveniensgrupper. Ingen negativ korrelation mellan tillväxt och stamkvalitet. Rekommendationer för ympad fröplantage och plantageplantor som kostnadseffektivt alternativ.
Three combined provenance and progeny trials with Douglas fir in South and Central Sweden were analyzed 18 – 19 years after planting. A general pattern was the presence of significant differences for growth traits between provenance groups of inland and coastal origin and even larger differences between provenances within groups. The most useful variation, however, was detected between open pollinated half sib families. No serious adverse correlation estimates were found between growth and stem quality traits. Growth traits and susceptibility for Rhabdocline needle cast seemed to be favorably correlated.
Strong additive genetic correlation estimates between the two southern trials suggested that the same regeneration material can be used in Götaland.
Plans for seed orchard establishment and for future breeding activities were proposed. Grafted seed orchards will be used as a first step of capturing the genetic gain by forward selection of plus trees within the best full sib families in good provenances. Seedling seed orchards, established after seed collection from the same plus trees, were presented as an alternative low cost method for mass propagation, and would also serve as clone archives for the breeding population in a low budget breeding program.
